Journey of Faith: History of Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community traces the evolution of one of the oldest senior living organizations in the USA. In the late 1840’s an Episcopal priest, who became responsible for four orphaned girls, felt it was the church’s responsibility to care for them. The bishop of the diocese, The Rt. Rev. Christopher Edwards Gadsden, had a similar concern for widows in the diocese. The institution experienced times of dire financial hardship, an evacuation during the Civil War, and bureaucratic setbacks, but also the unwavering dedication, faithful determination, and selfless generosity of a long line of men and women who believed in this mission and ministry. Today Bishop Gadsden Episcopal Retirement Community is a vibrant community of over 600 residents, nationally recognized for its distinctive architecture, the quality of its amenities and services, innovations in health care, and philanthropy that has regional impact. In this book, Bill Trawick, retired President/CEO, writes of the long and eventful history of this mission and ministry that has been important in the life of the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina for nearly 175 years.
